Privacy Policy — Fanfic Companion

Effective date: 16th May, 2026
Developer contact: blakbooksdevelopment@gmail.com

Overview

Fanfic Companion is a Chrome extension that adds tools to Archive of Our Own (AO3), Wattpad and FanFiction.net pages to help you save works and manage your reading tracker in Notion.
The extension does not sell user data, does not include analytics tracking, and does not store your tracker data in a developer-owned database. A small OAuth helper service is used only to complete the optional Notion sign-in flow.

What information the extension accesses

When you use the extension on supported fanfiction sites, it may read information visible on the page you’re viewing, such as work URL, title, author, fandom, tags, pairings, rating, summary, chapter count, word count, hits, kudos, bookmarks, publication/update dates, and other fic metadata.

The extension uses this information to provide user-facing features such as saving or updating works in Notion, showing reading progress, marking fics as already saved, estimating reading time, saving selected quotes or paragraph bookmarks, and displaying reading-related UI on supported pages.
If you use features that interact with Notion, the extension sends the relevant fic metadata and user-triggered updates to the Notion API so your Notion tracker can be created or updated.
If you use Internet Archive features, your browser may open archive.org or web.archive.org pages, and the extension may run on those pages where needed to support archive saves or archive lookup helpers.

What information the extension stores locally

The Extension stores settings and configuration in your browser using Chrome storage. This may include your Notion connection details or API key, Notion database/page IDs, reading speed, preferences, guided-tour state, import counts, alias mappings, cached fic lookup results, reading stats cache, CSV import/export working data, and other local UI/cache data used to improve the extension experience.
The data is stored in your browser and is not sent to the developer.

What the extension sends to third parties

The extension only sends data to third parties when needed for user-facing features:

  • Notion (api.notion.com): When you connect Notion or click actions such as saving a work, updating an entry, syncing reading progress, or refreshing stats, the extension sends relevant fic/tracker information to your Notion workspace using the Notion API.

  • Notion OAuth helper service (fanfic-companion-oauth.blakbooksdevelopment.workers.dev): Used only to complete the optional Notion OAuth connection flow and exchange the Notion login response for connection details.

  • Internet Archive (archive.org / web.archive.org): If you use archive-related features, your browser may open Internet Archive pages and the extension may interact with those pages to support archive saving and lookup.

The developer does not receive a copy of your Notion data. The extension does not record keystrokes, mouse movement, or browsing history for the developer.

Permissions explained
  • activeTab: Used when you click the extension icon or run a user-triggered action, so the extension can read the current supported fic page and show the Currently Reading/Reading Stats popup or save/update fic metadata.

  • scripting: Used to insert the extension's interface elements, buttons, progress indicators, guided tours, bookmark helpers, and archive helpers into supported pages.

  • storage: Used to save settings, preferences, Notion connection details, local caches, aliases, and guided-tour state in your browser.

  • unlimitedStorage: Used to support larger local helper data, such as fandom/pairing aliases, import progress, cached fic lookup results, reading stats cache, and CSV import/export working data.

  • tabs: Used for user-triggered actions such as importing open AO3 tabs, updating open fic tabs, opening Notion or Internet Archive pages, and sending messages to supported tabs to show extension UI.

  • contextMenus: Used to provide right-click menu actions, such as extension actions from the browser toolbar or page actions on supported sites.

  • identity: Used for the optional Notion connection flow. The extension uses Chrome identity to open Notion OAuth and receive the login direct.

  • Host permissions: Required to run on supported fanfiction sites so the extension can read fic metadata from the current page and add UI controls. Notion permissions are used to create or update tracker pages after user actions. Internet Archive permissions support user-triggered archive saves and archive lookup helpers.

Data retention

Data stored by the extension remains in your browser until you remove it, such as by changing settings, disconnection Notion, clearing extension storage, or uninstalling the extension.
Date sent to Notion is stored in your own Notion workspace according to Notion's policies. Data sent to Internet Archive is handled according to Internet Archive's policies.

Your choices and controls
  • You can remove the extension at any time to stop all functionality.

  • You can remove or change saved settings, including Notion connection details, in the extension's Options page.

  • You control what is sent to Notion by choosing which actions you click.

Security

The extension stores your settings locally using Chrome’s extension storage. You should treat your Notion credentials and API keys as sensitive and only use them on devices you trust. The developer cannot recover your key if you lose it.

The use of information received from Chrome APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
