FAQ

  • "Summary not found"
The "Summary not found" error occurs mostly due how the content is being copied over from AO3. The entire webpage needs to be copied or the macro will not function correctly. To ensure you're copying correctly, please make be sure of the following: You are copying only from the AO3 website - the formatting macro will not work with any other sites. You have 'Entire Work' selected You are copying the entire web page. You can use the shortcut ctrl + a (or cmd+a for Mac systems), to copy the full page, and then ctrl+c (or cmd+c) to copy.
  • "Variable name already exists"
The "Variable name already exists" error generally occurs when you run the macro twice within the same document. (As an example, this may occur if you run the macro, then delete the contents of the page, copy in a new fic and try to run the macro again.) For every instance that you run the macro, you need to open a fresh document.
  • One of my chapters is missing!
This usually happens because the author has used the phrase "Chapter #" (# being the number of the chapter) within the chapter notes, causing the macro to incorrectly delete or move content into the appendix section. Please see the below which is outlined in the Read Me file. 12. In the very rare occurance that a paragraph starts with the word "Chapter" followed by a number, this would be incorrectly identified as a chapter header and would have the Heading 1 style applied to it. If the paragraph is found within a section of Notes or a Summary, it would cause the notes to be cut off at this point in the Appendix. This is an unlikely occurrence, but it's good to be aware of it in case it does happen. If you want to be careful, the best practice is to do a scan through the document and check first and last sentences to make sure the full range of text has been processed correctly. To fix this, check the author notes of the chapter that has dissapeared, find where the author has used the phrase 'Chapter #', and shorten it to 'Chap#'. You can then run the macro and then afterwards change the text back.
  • Ambiguous name detected: CentimetersToPoints
This problem seems to be caused due to an issue with your default template. It can be fixed by deleting the template and forcing Word to create a fresh one. Close all instances of Word Navigate to: C:\Users\USER-NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates Move the two .dotm files to your desktop (if there is only one, just move the one) Re-open Word. It will automatically create a fresh default template. Try running the macro again and if it works you can safely delete the templates that you've moved to your desktop.
  • Does the Typesetting macro work anywhere aside from AO3?
At this stage, the macro is only compatible with works that have been published on AO3. With this being said, there is an imperfect way to use the macro with any body of text. First you need to copy any short fic into Word, but DON'T yet run the macro. Next replace the text of each chapter with your new text. You will need to leave the 'Chapter #' headers in place as well as the 'Chapter Text' line that comes directly afterwards. To reiterate, each chapter should be formatted as below: Chapter 1 Chapter Text *body text goes here* Chapter 2 Chapter Text *body text goes here* ...and so on. New chapters can be added just by maintaining this formatting structure. After all of your chapters are added in, you can run the macro.
  • How can I add pictures to my chapter headers?
If you have used the Raw-Text Formatting Macro, your document will already be set up to support chapter headers. All you need to do, is double-click into the header, and paste in your image there. It will be automatically repeated on each chapter header page. As a tip, once you've positioned your image where you want it, select the image and click the 'layout options' icon that appears at the top right of the image. From there, click 'see more...' at the bottom right of the pop up box. From there, make sure the 'lock anchor' button at the bottom is checked, and if you are centering your image, make sure the alignment is set to 'centered' relative to margin. If you are not centering your image, make sure the absolute position is set relative to the margin.
  • Does the Typesetting Macro work on html file downloads?
I have previously communicated through my insta stories that Typesetting Macro was compatible with html file downloads, however this is unfortunately incorrect. I am working on a version of the macro that will work on these files, but in the meantime you can use the 'save page as' feature in your web browser to save the entire web page, which can then be used with the macro as you normally would. (Make sure 'entire work' is selected before saving the page.)
  • How can I separate a fic into multiple volumes?
Run the Typesetting Macro on the full fic first, then save the fic however many times for each volume you need. (e.g if splitting into a three volume triology, save the document 3 times as fic1.doc, fic2.doc, fic3.doc). After this, you can delete the chapters you dont need for each volume.
